Keeping your bathroom clean isn't always easy, especially when it comes to limescale. If you live in a hard water area, you'll know all to well how difficult it can be to keep the chalky mineral deposits away from your bathroom

The toilet is a particular nightmare to remove limescale from, as it never seems to fully disappear no matter how often you clean. However, experts at Purdy and Figg say there's a 'perfect' way to get rid of it for good. And if you're using white vinegar or baking soda, you're doing it wrong

The pros have been raving about another natural item that's said to work wonders for removing toilet limescale - citric acid.

They said: "Often hailed as one of the most diverse natural cleaning agents, citric acid is the perfect addition for cleaning your toilet. Its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, de-greasing and whitening power has been used by thousands of people across the globe."

Citric acid, which is a white powder orginally derived from lemon juice, can be used for a number of cleaning jobs around the home, especially limescale-related ones. You should be able to find it in the cleaning aisle of any big supermarket, and it's so easy to use.

How to clean toilet with citric acid

It's recommended that you don't dilute citric acid powder with water if you're cleaning your toilet. Make sure to wear gloves to protect your hands, as it can be harsh on skin.

The first thing you should do is pour a bucket of warm water down the toilet, as the heat will loosen any limescale that's sitting at the bottom of the bowl.

Once it's cooled slightly, pour in some citric acid, and it'll sit at the bottom of the bowl and remove any remaining stains. Use a toilet brush to scrub away any marks, and repeat the process if necessary.

If you're trying to tackle stains around the bowl, then a different method might work better. Simply sprinkle some citric acid wherever you have any limescale stains, grab your toilet brush and start scrubbing away.

The paste will mix with the water to form a light paste, which you just leave on the bowl for a couple of hours.

Then, once the time is up, flush the toilet and you should find that all of the stains have vanished. Again, if the marks are particularly tough, you might need to do this a few times for the best results.
