It can be a nasty surprise, hopping into the shower only to spot a spider crouched in the corner of your bathroom. Spiders are beneficial to the environment and keep other bugs at bay, but if you’d rather not share your home with them, you’re not alone.

Spider breeding season typically kicks off around September, but this doesn’t mean the summer months are spider-free. If you want to keep spiders out of your home, but don’t want to rely on chemicals to do so, don’t panic. Alex Woods from Victorian Plumbing has shared his top tips on how to rid your house of creepy crawlies without spending a fortune.

He said there are some plants that spiders dislike due to their strong scent. Alex said: "Plants such as mint, lemongrass or eucalyptus will not only elevate your bathroom interior but they will help warn off spiders as they hate these kinds of aromas.’’

Another way you can deter spiders naturally is to use lemon peels.

Alex said: “This is a favourite trick of mine. Rub lemon peels all over the windowsills or anywhere spiders may try and perch like behind the toilet or cabinets. The citrus will repel them and will give your bathroom a nice scent.’’

You can also make your own spider deterring spray using strongly scented essential oils. Alec said ‘"A drop of essential oil is enough to deter a spider.

"You can make your spider repellent by mixing essential oil (20 drops) and water in a spray bottle. Spray corners of your bathroom or any moist areas that are likely to attract the insects.”

If you want to do this, the best oils to use are ones with a strong scent such as tea tree, lavender, peppermint, citrus and cinnamon.
