Be careful not to use too much liquid, as excess moisture can damage the carpet's underlay or floorboards, potentially leading to damp issues.

Once you've successfully removed stains, Carolyn Forté, Executive Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, suggested a simple 65p method to bring old, dingy carpets back to life after removing a thought stain.

Lightly sprinkle baking soda, which costs as little as 65p at some of the top UK supermarkets, over the surface and use a soft brush to work it into the fibres and make sure it penetrates.

After letting it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, vacuum the area thoroughly to restore your carpet’s appearance without leaving any residue behind.

And for those struggling with stains on wooden floors, like dark water marks, a quick mop may not suffice. One method involves soaking paper towels in vinegar and placing them over the stain to try and lift it.

Alternatives also include using hardwood floor cleaners, treating the area with a mix of dish soap and water for non-grease stains, or sanding and refinishing the affected spots.

The expert said: “Home pride is important to many, so dealing with stains can be a source of stress. Fortunately, the interest offers plenty of ideas for tackling these issues.

“Whether you’re dealing with spills, poor ventilation leading to staining, or mould growth, having quick and effective hacks at your disposal can help you address these problem areas with ease.”
