Window condensation can lead to the build-up of dampness and humidity, which can even lead to mould growth.

However, Britain's favourite cleaner, Lynsey Crombie – also known as the "Queen of Clean" – has revealed a simple solution using just one common kitchen item.

Surprisingly, washing-up liquid can help eliminate condensation and prevent it from forming.

What causes condensation?

Condensation forms when warm, moist air comes in contact with a cold surface, such as a window, which can lead to water droplets.

How washing-up liquid helps remove and prevent condensation

Washing-up liquid creates an invisible protective barrier on the window – and only a little drop of the stuff is needed.

Lynsey advised: "Pop a tiny amount [of washing-up liquid] onto a dry microfibre cloth and rub all over the glass pane."

She assured "you won't get smears as you are using the tiniest amount" of washing-up liquid.

Lynsey explained: "This creates a barrier and prevents condensation. This is such a brilliant old-school tip that works so well."

Such an inexpensive solution can save you from buying a more pricey dehumidifier. The ultimate trick to combating window moisture? Keep humidity levels in check throughout your home.

With colder weather outside and the expense of running a tumble dryer, drying clothes indoors may be the only option – but it does add humidity to your home.

To avoid the common pitfalls of indoor drying, Lynsey recommended drying clothes on a clothing horse in a room "with good ventilation".

By finding the brightest room in the home, you can place laundry in front of an open window to dry. "Close the door to this room whilst the window is open," Lynsey added.

Cooking and showering can also add moisture into the home, so cracking open a window slightly will help prevent condensation and mould growth.
