Cleaning your bathroom regularly is essential to prevent grime and a buildup of stains, as well as, of course, ensuring a fresh and hygienic environment.

Luckily, there’s an effective solution for this common household problem that will maintain your toilet seat in top condition without breaking the bank.

Using just two kitchen ingredients you likely have at home and can purchase for under £2 at most retailers, will work wonders with minimal hassle.

The classic vinegar and baking soda cleaning method works effectively due to the chemical reactions and properties of each ingredient.

White vinegar is acidic, which helps dissolve mineral deposits, soap scum, and grime.

Its acidity can break down stubborn stains and kill bacteria, making it a powerful disinfectant.

Baking soda is a mild abrasive that can help scrub away dirt and stains without scratching surfaces. It also has deodorising properties, neutralising odours in the toilet.

When vinegar and baking soda are combined, they create a fizzing reaction.

This reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, which helps lift and dislodge dirt and grime from surfaces, making it easier to wipe away.

You will need

  • White vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • Spray bottle

  • Soft cloth or sponge

  • Toilet brush (optional)

  • Rubber gloves (optional)

Instructions

Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle for easy application.

Generously spray the vinegar onto the toilet seat, covering all areas, including the hinges.

Sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar-soaked areas. You’ll see some fizzing as the two ingredients react, which helps lift grime.

Allow the mixture to sit for about 10-15 minutes. This will give it time to break down stains and disinfect the surface.

Using a soft cloth or sponge, gently scrub the toilet seat, focusing on any stubborn stains. For tough spots, you can also use a toilet brush.

Wipe the seat down with a clean, damp cloth to remove any vinegar and baking soda residue.

Finally, dry the toilet seat with a clean towel or let it air dry.
