Many people can put off cleaning their bathrooms due to limescale, which is a build-up of water minerals found inside toilets, around showers or even surrounding taps.

Limescale will form into rough grainy stains that often feel chalky or hard to touch and when it is on a tap it often looks like a crusty coating on the metal.

What makes limescale stains so frustrating to clean is that it sticks tightly to surfaces, and most cleaning products are infective against them as they cannot break down the mineral disapists.

Karon Grieve, a cleaning expert and founder of Larder Love has shared there is a “simple, effective, cheap, environmentally friendly and totally natural way” to deal with tap limescale that is likely already sitting in your kitchen.

She said: “Of course, you can use all manner of chemical and commercial products to get rid of it, but honestly why bother when you have the very tool in the kitchen – a used lemon.”

It may seem bizarre but lemons are one of the best ways to get rid of tap limescale as they contain citric acid which can dissolve the minerals in limescale.

Lemons also have natural degreasing properties so not all will leave a tap looking shiny and polished as well as being able to clean it effectively.

How to use a lemon to clean a tap

You do not have to use a fresh lemon for this cleaning solution, as you can use the lemon scrap left over after zesting or squeezing a lemon if you wish.

Karon added: “Now I say ‘used’ because I wouldn’t waste a nice fresh whole lemon for this, way too valuable for cooking etc. No, wait till you’ve squeezed the little darling and even grated off all the zest.”

All you need to do is cut a lemon in half and push it onto the bottom of a tap, making sure it is covering the limescale stain.

Keep the lemon in place by covering it with a plastic bag or with an elastic band, then leave the tap alone overnight or at least a couple of hours to allow the lemon to break down the limescale.

After the time is up, remove the bag or elastic band and the lemon, then simply wipe the tap with a clean cloth and the stains.

Karon said: “Et voila! Lovely sparkly taps. Now that’s how to use lemon to remove limescale from taps and wasn’t that easy!”

This is a very effective way to clean your taps without having to scrub them for ages with a toothbrush or having to use a harsh and pricy chemical solution.
