When it comes to decorating the bedroom and choosing the best paint colour, you want to get it right the first time.

"We don’t want to commit to putting just one shade on the walls in case we want to change other elements of the room," said Marianne Shillingford.

This is why it's important to consider a colour palette, the creative director of Dulux, Marianne Shillingford told HouseBeautiful earlier on in the year.

It's very likely, over time, that the bedding or accessories in the room will change, which can make the room look disjointed if there's only one hue. The decorator revealed: "The solution is to fall in love with a palette." She elaborated: "Have fun with details like adding bands and stripes of current favourites."

With this in mind, these are some of the best colour palettes to use when decorating your bedroom.

Pink

Blush pink is a feminine and inviting colour that pairs well with an off-white and warm grey. Farrow and Ball offer Pink Ground and Setting Plaster. These delicate paints can be flooded across the skirting boards, walls and ceilings.

Green

Dark green is a relaxing hue that brings an element of nature indoors. The deepest of greens is complemented by metallic finishes and glass to bring in shimmers of light. Dulux offers Forest Shade and Highland Green.

Orange

Gorgeous muted orange hues, such as terracotta and ochre, can bring in a Mediterranean influence into the bedroom. These colours are best complimented with green plants and wood furniture.

Yellow

Colour expert Marianne recommends "a beautiful versatile neutral like Spiced Honey" from Dulux. She said: "In rooms that struggle with lack of daylight, adding a sunshine shade is a great way to add brightness."

Cream

Gentle neutrals are the ideal backdrop to promote a lovely, calming bedroom. However, the room can be emboldened with more vibrant accessories, such as throw pillows and ornaments.
