WASHING clothes in the colder months can be a chore, with chunky knitwear and the cold weather making for more frequent and overloaded washes - but how can you keep your woolly clothes intact when cleaning them?

There’s no better feeling than slipping into a fluffy jumper in the autumn and winter months when the weather lets us down. But while many of us enjoy the fluffiness of our winter-wear, frequent washing can quickly ruin the softness of woollen clothes. Cleaning your clothes the right way will keep your woolly items softer for longer and Beko has revealed it top tips on just how to do it.
Research by Beko has revealed that as a nation, we Brits are not the most clued up when it comes to doing our washing.
The home appliance experts found that 65 percent of Brits rely on their mum and dad to do their laundry.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, experts at Beko added: “That figure then rose to 75 percent for men!
“Nearly a third of Brits would also be more likely to ask their parents to do their laundry, than for a loan.”

When it comes to washing our clothes, getting them clean is the top priority.
You may have mastered the cleaning element of laundry but few of us know how to really look after our favourite fabrics.
While fabric softeners are renowned for their softening qualities when washing clothes, some fabrics can take a real hit with each spin leaving them stiff rather than soft.
Protecting the fluffiness of your favourite winter wear is easily resolved with Beko’s unusual freezer hack.
How to keep your woolly clothes fluffy
Freezing your clothes before washing them is one unusual way to protect the softness of the material.
You can use this trick on:
- Wool
- Cotton
- Linen
- Other natural soft fibres
All you need to do is pop your clothing items in a plastic bag and place in your freezer for a while before washing.
Leave the clothing items in the freezer for two or three hours prior to washing on the correct cycle.
The minus temperature of your freezer will prevent the bobbling of your softer fabrics by solidifying the fibres to maintain a stiff structure.
This will then be relaxed when washed while maintaining the pre-wash fluffiness of your autumnal attire.
Always check the labels on your garments before trialling this.

How to wash woollen clothes
Gentle cleansing is the key to keeping your woollen garments looking and feeling brand new.
Delicate wash cycles or dedicated wool cycles are ideal for washing your winter jumpers or sweaters, so opt for this when using the washing machine.
Hand wash cycles are also very gentle on your clothes and will prevent colours runningfrom the fibres.
- Use cold water (30 degrees) and a mild liquid detergent
- Add an extra rinse to the wash cycle
- Avoid drying wool in a tumble dryer to prevent shrinking
Beko's top tips for cold-weather laundry days
Use vinegar on sweat stains
Sweat stains can be removed by rubbing a little white vinegar on the affected area before washing.
Do a dye test
Avoid colour-run mishaps by testing out the fabric before washing.
Dampen a small area of the material and press a white tissue or clean cloth onto it - if the colour transfers, keep separate from opposing colours.
Wash tights and socks in a pillowcase
Washing tights to keep them from snagging can be done by placing them in a pillowcase or mesh bag when on a wash or dry cycle.
Do the same for your socks to stop them disappearing into the rubber seal of your washing machine or dryer.
