The first months of the New Year can be tough on your wallet. Post-Christmas can be an extremely tight time of year financially. In fact, research shows that by January 21, the average Brit has run out of spending money. If you’re finding it tricky to make ends meet through the winter, there could be a simple solution hiding tucked away in the back of your cupboard.

Sam Wilson, director at Gadget GoGo, says millions of households are unknowingly sitting on hundreds of pounds’ worth of unused tech during what is often the tightest month of the year. He said: "Many households are sitting on tech worth hundreds.  Most people don't realise just how much value is locked in the devices they no longer use. Selling now can mean avoiding overdraft fees or clearing credit cards.”

Old smart phones

If you’ve updated your phone but still have the old model tucked away somewhere, it could be worth more than you think. iPhone 12s regularly sell for over £250 on eBay and new models can fetch well over £700.

Sam said: “The phone you replaced last year might fetch a couple of hundred pounds.

“Even models four or five years old can sell for £50–£100 if they’re working.”

iPads

Extra tablets are a godsend if you’re looking for some quick cash. iPads hold their value well and three-year-old iPad Pro models still being worth over £400 online, depending on condition.

Sam said: “That’s enough to cover most energy bills for the month.”

PlayStations

With newer models sweeping the market, old game systems are often boxed up and forgotten about but they could be worth more than you think.

A working PS4 or Xbox One can still sell for £100–£150 or more if bundled with games and accessories.

Sam said: “They’re still hugely popular with buyers looking for cheaper alternatives - and if you’ve kept the box, even better.”

Smart watches

Once the buzz of a New Year’s resolution fades, smart watches end up covered in dust in the abc of a drawer. However, some models of these can still fetch a pretty penny. Sam said:  “Even an Apple Watch Series 7 which came out in 2021 is still worth over £100.
