As the winter months approach, many Brits are beginning to question when is the best time to turn on the heating, and what temperature should be maintained to stay warm while keeping energy bills manageable.

With the cost of living still a concern, finding the right balance between warmth and energy savings is more important than ever.

Thankfully, energy experts at Utility Bidder have shared their insights into the optimum temperature for both your finances and health.

James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder, recommends maintaining your thermostat between 18C and 21C during the colder months.

This range not only helps to manage heating costs but is also critical for ensuring health and comfort.

“Studies have shown that heating your home to between 18C and 21C is ideal for staying warm without inflating your energy bills,” Longley explained.

"This temperature is supported by the World Health Organization, which recommends heating homes to at least 18C to maintain good health and a positive sleep routine."

However, Longley also noted that specific groups such as the elderly, young children, and those who are unwell should aim for a slightly warmer home, ideally around 20C.

He cautioned against turning the thermostat too low, as it can put your health at risk while not providing cost savings in the long run.

For those looking to keep heating costs down this winter, Utility Bidder has provided practical advice on how to maintain warmth in your home without cranking up the central heating.

Here are five expert tips:

1. Make the Most of Shower Steam

Hot showers produce steam, which naturally warms the air.

Keep your bathroom door open while showering so that the steam spreads into other areas of the house, creating an extra layer of warmth.

2. Strategically Place Furniture

Furniture placement can significantly impact heating efficiency.

Ensure radiators are not blocked by large items such as sofas, as they absorb heat meant for the room.

Keeping radiators exposed will help distribute warmth more effectively.

3. Place Curtains Behind the Radiator

When curtains cover a radiator, they funnel heat toward the window instead of the room.

Tucking curtains behind the radiator allows the heat to spread evenly across the space.

4. Keep Out Drafts

Even the smallest draft can let cold air in and warm air out.

Make sure to block drafts by using draft excluders at the base of doors, sealing pet flaps, and fixing letterboxes.

This simple step can make a noticeable difference in maintaining warmth.

5. Invest in Electric Blankets

Electric blankets are a low-cost, energy-efficient way to stay warm.

With prices starting from £30, they are far cheaper to run than most room heaters.

A standard 100W electric blanket costs between 2p and 4p per hour to operate, offering an affordable way to stay cosy during colder nights.
