Breast cancer symptoms and signs tend to involve unusual changes to the breast area.
The cancer affects one in eight women during their lifetime, according to Cancer Research UK, and one in 870 men. This amounted to 370 cases in 2015.
However, according to a survey by Breast Cancer Care, a charity, three-1uarters of men "don;t check their breasts for signs and symptoms of breast cancer, even though the same number know that men can get the disease".
There were 370 cases of breast cancer in men in 2015.
“It develops in the small amounts of breast tissue men have behind their nipples,” said the NHS, explaining how men develop the condition.
Watch out for these four signs of the condition, according to the US-based Mayo Clinic.
Breast cancer symptoms: Can men get breast cancer?
Lump in the breast
The Clinic said a “painless” lump inside the breast or “thickening in your breast tissue” may be a sign of the condition.
The NHS added the lump “doesn’t move around within the breast”.
Skin changes
“Changes to the skin covering your breast, such as dimpling, puckering, redness or scaling,” may also indicate breast cancer continued the Mayo Clinic.
If skin around the nipple becomes hard, red or swollen this may also be a sign of the cancer.
“A sore or rash around the nipple that doesn’t go away,” was also mentioned as a symptom by the NHS.
Nipple changes
If this area becomes “red” or “scaly” this could be a sign of the cancer.
A nipple “that begins to turn inward”, or inverted nipple, may also be an indicator, continued the Mayo Clinic.
Discharge
Any leaking or discharge from male nipples could also be a warning sign of male breast cancer, said the Mayo Clinic.
“Fluid oozing from the nipple which may be streaked with blood,” was also identified as a sign by the NHS.
As well as these four symptoms, the national healthcare provider said small bumps in the armpit, which indicate swollen glands, should also be treated as a warning sign.
“Male breast cancer is a rare cancer that forms in the breast tissue of men,” said the Mayo Clinic.
“It is most common in older men, though it can occur at any age.
“Men diagnosed with male breast cancer at an early stage have a good chance for a cure.
“Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the breast tissue.”
