What to do if your water is contaminated with E. coli
Dozens of supermarket sandwiches and wraps have been recalled amid fears of E.coli contamination, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA). It comes after people have been left hospitalised due to an outbreak of the infection.
The recall includes products from Boots, Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury's and Amazon.
Both Asda and Tesco stated this was a precaution and said shoppers could return the products for a refund.
Companies Greencore and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood supplied the affected products.
It's expected other manufacturers will issue their own recalls in the coming hours, Sky News reports.
In a statement provided to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the FSA said it had narrowed down the “wide range of foods consumed to a small number of salad leaf products that have been used in sandwiches, wraps, subs and rolls”.
Darren Whitby, head of incidents at the FSA, explained: “Sandwich manufacturers are taking a precautionary measure to recall various sandwiches, wraps, subs and rolls in response to findings from investigations by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) who are working to identify the cause of an ongoing outbreak caused by shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC).”
Data from the UKHSA revealed that cases of STEC had nearly doubled in the last week, with a further 98 bringing the total to 211.
However, numbers are expected to rise as testing continues for more cases.

Based on information the UKHSA has from 160 cases to date, 42 percent of patients were hospitalised.
A break down of the cases reported in the UK are:
- 147 in England
- 27 in Wales
- 35 in Scotland
- Two in Northern Ireland (but for these cases, evidence suggests that they acquired their infection while visiting England).
Symptoms
Symptoms of STEC can be severe and can include bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.
According to Public Health England, about half of cases have bloody diarrhoea.
However, some people may have mild diarrhoea, or even no symptoms at all, the health body said.
Symptoms can last up to two weeks in cases without complications.
A small proportion of patients, mainly children, may develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) which is a serious life-threatening condition resulting in kidney failure.
If you believe you have been infected with STEC there are steps you should take to help prevent passing it on to others.
Trish Mannes, incident director at UKHSA, said: “Washing your hands with soap and warm water and using disinfectants to clean surfaces will help stop any further spread of infection.
“If you are unwell with diarrhoea and vomiting, you should not prepare food for others while unwell and avoid visiting people in hospitals or care homes to avoid passing on the infection in these settings.
“Do not return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped.”
