'I'm a gastroenterologist - here are three drinks I consume daily'
Three popular beverages packed with antioxidants are "great" for two aspects of your health, according to a doctor.
A stomach doctor has revealed the drinks he consumes daily to keep his gut and liver healthy.
Dr Saurabh Sethi, a board-certified gastroenterologist, took to his TikTok channel to explain the health benefits of popular beverages, including green tea and coffee.
From keeping your risk of liver disease at bay to benefiting your gut, the following beverages are “great” for your health.
1. Green tea
A popular alternative to coffee, green tea is an “excellent choice” thanks to its content of catechins, which are powerful antioxidants that benefit both the gut and the liver, Dr Sethi explained.
The effects of catechins on your overall health are well-documented by research as well. For example, one study, published in the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research and Care, found that drinking four cups of green tea on a daily basis could help people with type 2 diabetes live longer.

Furthermore, a literature review, published in the journal Chinese Medicine, suggests that green tea might also protect against Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and even some types of cancer.
2. Coffee
Another drink that the gastroenterologist enjoys is coffee. He said: “It is a great option as it contains multiple antioxidants and has been proven to promote liver health by managing fatty liver disease and also decreasing the risk of liver cancer.”
Don’t just take the gastroenterologist’s word for it, as research, published in the journal of Clinical And Experimental Hepatology, found that people who consume more than two cups of coffee daily have a lower chance of developing fibrosis and cirrhosis of the liver.

However, the stomach expert advised against adding any sugar to your cup in order to reap the health benefits.
3. Smoothie
Dr Sethi added that he loves to consume a smoothie made out of berries, which are high in antioxidants, along with spinach and coconut water.
While smoothies are often labelled as an unhealthy choice due to their sugar content, Dr Emma Derbyshire, public health nutritionist, previously told Express.co.uk that smoothies retain some of the fibre from the fruit and veg used in them and have a lower glycaemic index than juices.
