Blood test that spots baby eye cancer rolled out across NHS
A GENETIC test to spot a rare form of eye cancer in unborn babies is being rolled out across the NHS.
The check can detect retinoblastoma in babies
The check can detect retinoblastoma in babies and could lead to 50 cases a year in England being identified. The cancer can lead to the loss of both eyes and even death if undetected.
The new test - involving analysis of blood from the mother - was developed at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.
NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said: "It has the potential to save hundreds of lives over the coming years."
