Gardeners urged to avoid key mistake to help tomatoes 'grow in abundance' this summer
Growing tomatoes in summer can yield an abundant harvest, but common tomato mistakes could ruin your crop. Here's how to avoid them.

Tomatoes are a beloved and fulfilling crop to cultivate in the garden from the ground up, with summer being the prime season for them to flourish. June marks the start of tomato harvesting season, and with July fast approaching, your plants ought to be in full swing for a bumper crop.
However, gardening enthusiast and TikTok creator Ish has warned that if plants are thriving yet failing to produce plump tomatoes, growers could be making one very straightforward error. In a recent clip, Ish outlined the most frequent blunders gardeners commit when cultivating tomatoes. He said: "If your tomato plants are thriving but not growing any tomatoes, then there's a few things you can do to remedy this, because chances are it's just one simple mistake that's stopping them from growing."

One frequently overlooked error continuously diverts energy away from your tomatoes, hampering their development. Ish noted that the plants may be producing surplus stems, which can be removed to properly encourage the tomatoes to flourish.
Examine the plant carefully and identify any sideshoots that may have appeared. Ish explained that these sideshoots will want to "grow and grow and grow", sapping essential nutrients from the tomatoes themselves, reports the Mirror.
Ish said: "These sideshoots want to grow and grow and grow, which is fantastic, but it's taking all the nutrients for growing and not focusing on growing any tomatoes."
This issue can be swiftly resolved by simply snapping off any sideshoots using your fingers or a pair of secateurs. A further error many gardeners make is failing to use the right type of feed.

In this case, a dedicated tomato feed is precisely what is required.
This feed should be applied on a weekly to fortnightly basis throughout the summer. Tomato feed is packed with vital nutrients, including potassium and phosphorus, which stimulate the fruits to grow bigger and juicier.
All that is needed is a capful mixed into four to five litres of water in a watering can, applied directly onto the compost to replenish the nutrients in the soil.
Tomato feed will prompt the plant to produce a greater number of tomatoes. Ish noted that this particular feed can equally be used on other fruit and vegetable crops.
It is also essential to ensure the plants receive sufficient water, with gardeners advised to keep the soil reasonably moist during the summer months.
That said, it is equally important to prevent the soil from drying out completely. If the soil repeatedly fluctuates between wet and dry conditions, it will place the plant under considerable "stress" and result in fewer tomatoes being produced.
Should any tomatoes manage to grow while this error is occurring, they are likely to split.
