Garden with Tom: Tips on Hydrangea Annabelle flowers

The blooms of Hydrangea Annabelle are arriving in style. A woody frame over wintertime can leave us wondering whether the Hydrangea Annabelle is actually happy and healthy. We look hard enough and see little buds by springtime with green growth starting not long after and by early summertime green stems have produced this year’s blooms.

Best spot for your hydrangea

A shrub with delicate blooms can wither in too much sunshine and heat. A spot in the garden with part sun is ideal, as the Hydrangea Annabelle has time to recover from any hot sun during the shady time of the day.

Planting or repotting

Hydrangea Annabelle can be planted in a sizeable pot or container and a garden pot. The potted Hydrangea can be fed with a Hydrangea Feed every month during the growing season, boosting the compost within.

They can be bought and planted any time of the year, even summertime if watered regularly to ensure the roots and shrub don’t go dry. The best times, however, are early spring and autumn when the ground is warm, soft and moist.

Watering

A regular watering at the base of the plant will keep the plant in peak condition. A catchy saying is Hydrangea by name, Hydration by nature.

Pruning

The blooms are on new growth, so a pruning in wintertime to tidy up the woody frame is fine. The old wood will be the starting point for the new growth, and with the new growth comes the white blooms.

A winter pruning is fine, cutting away this year’s growth and spent blooms to leave the woody frame for next cycle of new growth and buds. A shrub which is just too good to be missed out on.
