Experts reveal the best time to water your plants to prevent fungal diseases

You might think you’re watering your shrubs properly, but experts say there are some things you need to consider. In summer, with hot temperatures making their way across the UK, it’s crucial to ensure you’re giving your plants what they need to survive.

You’ll want to enjoy your outdoor space in the warmer weather, and making sure it looks its best can help if you plan to host barbecues or guests. There are some simple tips you can follow to prevent your plants from getting any diseases. Summer is an important season for your plants, with more sunlight, meaning they could grow quickly if you water them properly.

All Above Tree Care says: “The secret to successful bush maintenance lies in understanding the natural growth cycle of your plants.

“Each season demands different care approaches, starting with early spring preparation through to winter protection.

“During the growing season, regular inspection of your bushes helps identify potential issues before they become serious problems.”

It adds that you should water your plants deeply but infrequently, and you should ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.

The experts say you should provide two to three centimetres of water per wee,k which is sufficient for established shrubs.

It adds: “Proper timing is crucial when it comes to maintenance tasks. Early morning watering reduces evaporation and helps prevent fungal diseases, while pruning should typically be done during the dormant season or immediately after flowering, depending on the species.”

If you don’t currently have any shrubs planted but you’re keen to add some to your garden, BBC Gardener’s World says planning is important.

It says you should work out what to grow where, rather than getting carried away at the garden centre and ending up with a jumble of plants that don't look good together and might not suit your growing conditions.

Planning will also enable you to use colour and structure wisely, which will help you create a garden that looks great throughout the year.

By following these easy tips, you can ensure your shrubs will grow properly and you won’t have to face any diseases which could make your plants look uncared for.
