Blueberry plants will grow bigger berries if watered with 1 natural scrap item they ‘love’
Blueberry bushes add year-round beauty to gardens and provide a bounty of tasty fruits each summer; however, to do so, feeding them is essential.
Blueberries are a delicious and highly nutritious fruit. They also come from attractive shrubs, with pretty white flowers in spring and lovely leaf colour in autumn. These bushes are easy to grow and don't need much attention, but the main thing to remember is that they need to be grown in acidic soil.
To add acidity to the soil, gardeners James and Courtney behind the Instagram page @collins.country have shared their go-to “DIY organic blueberry fertiliser” recipe. It takes two weeks for the fertiliser to be ready, and you only need one main thing these plants “love” — banana peels.

In the video, Courtney recommends steeping banana peels in water to give blueberry bushes “added nutrients”.
She said: “This banana peel fertiliser works great! If you only let it sit for three days, you can use it on any plant because it won’t be acidic.
“But if you’re using it for blueberries, then you want to let it sit for at least two weeks so that it’s acidic.

“We love this fertiliser! We put it on our blueberry plants all summer long, even after they are done producing fruit.
“Our soil here is horrible clay, so we have to add nutrients to help the plants grow and reach their max potential.”
No need to chop them up, just start by adding banana peels to a jar, as many as you have, before covering with water.
Try to use rainwater if possible, as tap water contains lime, and this can make the soil more alkaline over time instead of acidic.
Make sure not to cover the jar with a lid because the solution will start to bubble up as it ferments.
Two weeks later, the fertiliser will be ready. At this point, you need to add the banana peel water to a watering can and fill the rest up with regular water and use it on your blueberry bushes.
