Gardeners across the country are being told to remove one item as it will "prevent diseases" from spreading among their plants.

Keeping your garden healthy through winter can be a challenge, but an avid gardener has taken to TikTok to share a handy tip. A fellow expert has also revealed the best ways to keep your lawn in good condition as the colder months set in.

Posting their bullet point list of things to do to your garden this November, Coopers of Stortford on TikTok suggested this time of year is great for planting certain items.

But your progress could be hindered if you fail to take one precaution in your garden. They suggested: "Clear old plants and weeds, and prune affeced rose leaves to prevent disease."

This was one of seven tips the gardening account shared.

Their advice also included what to plant in your garden, with the account revealing: "November is great for planting tulip bulbs, garlic, shallots, and onions." It was a perfect time also for those wanting to harvest "pumpkins and squash" as their seeds can be used for next spring.

Protecting and providing for the garden was also a necessity, with the TikTok post revealing people should "cover garden furniture to protect it from the elements" and "provide bird feeders and water, and offer shelter for hedgehogs."

They added: "Aerate and feed your lawn, and rake fallen leaves." Expert Tom Clamp, Head of Technical at Doff, revealed the importance of maintaining your garden over winter.

He said: "Scarify the lawn if you notice a build-up of thatch or moss as this will improve the flow of water and nutrients to the roots. Aeration is also key. Making small holes in compacted areas allows air, water and nutrients to penetrate the soil more effectively.

"Finally, keep your lawn clear of fallen leaves and debris, as these can trap moisture and invite in disease."

If the grass is not taking to its winter treatment, there is no need to panic. Tom adds: "If your grass is looking a bit worse for wear, the best time to start repairs is early autumn or spring, when soil temperatures rise above 7°c and the risk of frost is lower.

"Overseeding any bare or thinning patches will help restore your lawn’s density, and a good quality feed will promote quicker recovery."
