Peace lily houseplant blooms beautifully in autumn with 1 kitchen scrap ingredient
Beautiful peace lilies may have an abundance of white spathes when bought from the store, which eventually brown, wilt and fall off, but new ones can grow back.
Spring and autumn are primetime growing seasons for peace lily houseplants, which means that they can flower a few more white-looking flowers.
When my peace lily had shed its white spathes and started to show mottled leaves during the summer, I was concerned about its wellbeing.
Seeking expert advice from horticulturalist Graham Smith MClhort, from LBS Horticulture, he revealed a few reasons why that could be so.
Firstly, he suggested the peace lily could be suffering from a nutrient deficiency and, secondly, it could be adverse to tap water.
The third reason could be root rot which, thankfully, didn't happen to be the case for me when I checked out the roots.
Taking on Graham's advice, I repotted my peace lily (in a nice new pot, I might add) and returned to watering it weekly with boiled, then cooled, water from the tap.
As I live in an area with hard water, like much of the UK, boiling the water helped to reduce the calcium content that would otherwise upset my peace lily.
I didn't need to boil the water on the hob, either, as the kettle did a good enough job and then I would just let it cool down before watering my plants.
Plant enthusiasts elsewhere have touted about the wonders of banana water, because of its nutrient content that encourages peace lilies to bloom white spathes once more.

Right now my peace lily is full of lovely green foliage, but it's my mission to see if the gardening hack will lead to a bunch of beautiful white spathes during autumn.
While liquid fertiliser is the go-to recommendation by the expert, I came across a post on Facebook where somebody claimed banana water could cause an abundance of flowering.
Gail Lacoste posted to Facebook: "I have been watering my peace lily with banana peel water. It has been flowering like crazy with big flowers and growing faster.
"You put the banana peel in a jar of water with the lid on; leave it in the water overnight, or a couple of days.
"I also save the water in a jug. We both eat a banana a day so I have a lot of water to save. I water once a week or more often if needed."
Another person, Christine Spaulding, commented on the post: "I also use banana water; it's amazing."
Curious to see if this banana water works for my peace lily houseplant, I've began watering my plant every week with banana water.
So far it's only been a fortnight... so I'll have to keep it up during autumn to see if banana water helps my peace lily bloom once more, just like others have said it did for them.
