New summer salads
TODAY's salads offer so much more than the lettuce and tomato of yore. but which supermarket is the pick of the crop?
M&S Italian Style Chargrilled Chicken Salad with Red Pesto Dressing, 225g, £3.75
There's a generous amount of chicken but the pasta is a little dry and the olives are too salty. The red pesto dressing is delicious though, and ties all the flavours together nicely.
VERDICT: 7/10
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Tomato and Mozzarella Salad, 160g, £2.50
You get a lot of leaves here and the dressing and mozzarella are good quality, but the whole thing is very insubstantial. This would make a lovely side salad but it's not a main course.
VERDICT: 7/10
Waitrose Aromatic Oriental Rice and Mango Salad, 150g, £2.49
This small side salad has an exotic flavour, with lime, mango, wild rice and edamame beans. The dressing adds yet another element, with a strong aroma of sesame and ginger. 7/10
The Co-operative Good Life Smoked Peppered Mackerel and Jewelled Couscous, 205g, £2.60
This is a moreish salad with peppery mackerel and tasty pomegranate seeds, plus couscous and spelt to make it a more substantial dish.
VERDICT: 8/10
Tesco Finest Spanish Chorizo and Manchego Pasta Salad, 210g, £2.10
This is a delicious pasta salad with generous helpings of chorizo and parsley. There's so much flavour here, and you also get a lovely tongue-tingle from the hot paprika and chipotle sauce.
VERDICT: 9/10
