Supermarket giant Morrisons has set out the fruits and vegetables customers should buy in June in order to pick up seasonal and local produce from British farmers.

While we’re lucky to live in an age where almost any fruit and veg can be bought all year round (even if it is flown in from the other side of the world), those who follow rules on only buying British, or only wanting food in season in the UK because it’s much better for the environment, have been told which foods they should buy each month in Morrisons’ seasonal food guide.

Morrisons says: “Next time you’re pulling your shopping list together, why not take a peek at what’s in season? We share our hero highlights of the different fruit and veg in season each month, with plenty of recipe inspiration to help you celebrate the best of British seasonal produce.

“Choosing fresh, seasonal food by shopping at our Market Street Greengrocers is a win-win for everyone. It’s kinder to your pocket, sourced locally from British farmers and better for your body, because when it comes to fruit and veg, the fresher it is, the better it is.”

In summer, Morrisons says several fresh fruits are in season: “Savour the taste of sunshine with our bright and brilliant summer produce. It’s the ultimate season for British beef, perfect for the BBQ, alongside a rainbow of summer fruit and veg. Toss together a refreshing Sweetcorn Confetti Salad for your next garden party, or celebrate the season's harvest with our indulgent Plum and Summer Fruit Pudding, packed with sun-ripened berries. From garden to grill, summer is all about simple, spectacular flavours."

Its full list of in season fruits and vegetables for June is:

  • Strawberries

  • Cherries

  • Raspberries

  • Sweetheart Cabbage

  • Turnips

  • Chillies

  • Chives

  • The National Trust also supports buying seasonal food, even if you can't grow your own. It says: "Growing your own fruit and vegetables or even just buying seasonal food is a great way to help the environment. It reduces food miles and the need for plastic packaging, both of which contribute to climate change. From January to December discover what to harvest, plant and buy each month with our guide to seasonal food."
