Cheese on toast is a classic British dish that is one of the easiest meals to make, and I love eating it when I want a quick lunch that will fill me up. It is a cheap and cheerful meal, but it can be boring if you just use bread and cheese, so I have a simple way to make it even more flavourful.

There is nothing better than melted cheese, but it is quite rich and can feel really greasy at times, which is why it is always better to pair it with another topping. After testing ketchup, Dijon mustard, and other condiments, I have discovered that Worcestershire sauce is the clear winner and will greatly enhance the taste of cheesy toast.

I have been making cheese on toast all my life and tried it countless ways, but found that Worcestershire sauce is easily the most effective way to add the depth of flavour it would otherwise be missing.

Cheese is really fatty and salty, which tastes amazing, but it can be quite an overpowering ingredient, so it can often start to feel quite bland on its own over time.

However, Worcestershire sauce is acidic, which cuts through the fat in cheese to make it feel less heavy and helps sharpen the overall flavour.

It simply amplifies the savouriness of the cheese, so when you heat it up, the fermented ingredients and spices in the Worcestershire sauce become more fragrant.

The cheesy toast will have a slightly mixed sweetness, saltiness and spiciness to make this simple dish incredibly tasty and greatly improve it just using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.

How to make cheesy toast taste even better

To begin, preheat the oven to 200C for a few minutes, and add some baking paper to a tray.

Next, toast the bread in the oven for one to two minutes. This helps the bread keep its structure so it does not become soggy from the melted cheese.

Take the toast out of the oven and spread some butter on it. If you wish, some people prefer to use mayonnaise instead of butter, as it actually helps bread crisp up better, but use whatever you prefer.

Add your cheese and sprinkle a few drops of Worcestershire sauce on top. Put back in the oven under the grill for roughly three minutes or until the cheesy toast is bubbling and golden.

Once it is ready, season it with some black pepper, and it will be one of the best comfort foods that you can make in only five minutes.
