I made Pret a Manger's £4.10 muesli at home — it tastes exactly the same

I love a breakfast that feels fancy and this recipe is super delicious, and incredibly easy.

Express shares recipe for Pret-style bircher muesli

I’m always on the hunt for new meal ideas. I’m not one of those people that is happy eating the same thing for months on end, so trying to find new exciting recipes is a hobby of mine.

I also love trying to replicate my favourite takeaways - and one of my favourites is a breakfast from Pret a Manger. Their bircher muesli with pomegranate and pistachio is my favourite treat when I’m in the office. It’s surprisingly filling for such a small serving, and the perfect balance of sweet and tart to set the day off right.

What I don't love however, is the price tag. So when I came across this recipe promising I could make it just as easily from home - I knew I needed to give it a go.

The recipe called for it to be refrigerated overnight and when I woke up for breakfast the next day I was super excited to try it.

It tasted almost exactly like the real thing, but not as sweet, which was great because I always feel a little guilty eating essentially a pudding for breakfast.

The texture was slightly different too, but I attribute that to the fact that I use fat-free yoghurt - I think next time I’ll go for the full-fat stuff because I think that will make it a little creamier.

It kept me filled up until lunch time, and it was super easy to prepare. This is a recipe that is definitely going in my meal rotation, and I can’t wait to make it again

The ingredients for bircher muesli laid on a wooden chopping board

The ingredients are pretty simple (Image: Vita Molyneux)

Ingredients:

  • 200g Greek yoghurt (low-fat yoghurt works as well)

  • 50g rolled oats

  • Two green apples

  • 20g raisins (I hate raisins so left them out)

  • 20g cranberries (and a few extra)

  • 1.5 tbsp pumpkin seeds

  • One tbsp honey or golden syrup

  • 10g pistachios

  • Three tbsp pomegranate kernels

Method

  • Grate your apples into a medium-sized bowl. I found peeling them first makes them easier to grate, but that might just be because my grater isn’t very sharp.
  • Add your yoghurt, honey, oats, cranberries, pumpkin seeds and raisins (if you’re using them) into the bowl.
  • Mix thoroughly to combine, then put in an airtight container and chill in the fridge overnight
  • To serve, sprinkle with pomegranate seeds and pistachios
  • Enjoy!
