'I was never a confident chef until I tried this game changing subscription box'

Food subscription boxes have surged in popularity in recent years, saving busy people time and reducing waste while offering a convenient, mindful alternative to cooking from scratch or ordering takeaway. With so many food subscription boxes to choose from, it can feel overwhelming, but one kept catching my eye: Green Chef.
Green Chef is a UK-based food subscription service offering nutritionist-approved recipes with a strong focus on sustainability. The brand prioritises ethically sourced ingredients from British farms and suppliers and uses recyclable packaging where possible, which is a big tick for anyone trying to make more environmentally conscious choices.
As a busy Londoner (and someone who's never exactly loved cooking), I'm probably Green Chef's target customer. While I've historically leaned heavily on dinners out and Deliveroo orders, I've been making a conscious effort to teach myself new recipes and be healthier over the last few months.
So, I decided to put Green Chef to the test, trying three recipes over the course of a week. Would it inspire me to cook more at home, or would I revert to my usual takeaway habits?
What to know about Green Chef
Green Chef allows users to choose a box size based on how many meals they want per week, with the flexibility to cancel, change meals or skip a week, as long as it's done at least five days in advance. Each box serves either two or four people, with up to five recipes per delivery.
There are also eight dietary preferences to choose from, including high-protein, low-carb, keto, and vegan, making it one of the more flexible options for specific eating styles. Ingredients arrive pre-portioned and delivered straight to the front door, tailored to the selected dietary preference.
Inside the box, shoppers will find detailed recipe cards that walk them through each step, along with calorie information, allergen details, and helpful prep notes on what they'll need before starting (think baking trays, kitchen paper, or specific pans).
Pricing varies depending on how many meals and servings are chosen, but Green Chef is currently offering 40% off, bringing a box for two people with four meals down to £31.15 from £51.92.

My honest review of Green Chef
When it came to choosing recipes, I went for fish goujon sandwiches, a 21-day-aged rump steak, and a king prawn and tenderstem broccoli stir-fry. All three sounded like meals I'd happily order at a restaurant or cook at home if I actually knew what I was doing, so while I wasn't pushed wildly out of my comfort zone, I still felt like I was getting a good mix of flavours and nutrients.
Everything arrived on time, with ingredients neatly bundled into separate, numbered paper bags, making it easy to see which bits belonged to which recipe. Larger items like bread, meat and fish weren't included in the bags (to keep them fresher and properly chilled), but they were clearly labelled and easy to store away.
As someone who's not the most confident cook, I roped my boyfriend in to help. We started with the rump steak, and he commented almost immediately on the quality of the ingredients; everything looked fresh and well-sourced, which definitely set a good tone before we even started cooking.
Following the instructions was refreshingly straightforward. Each recipe card broke the process down into manageable steps, and while I needed a few basics on hand (olive oil, salt, and pepper), there was a clear pantry section that told me exactly what wasn't included before I started.

What really surprised me was how much I enjoyed the cooking process itself. With everything already portioned out, there was no stressful scrambling for scales or measurements. There was some chopping and prep involved, and yes, we did briefly have to Google how to chop bok choy for the stir-fry, but nothing felt overly technical or intimidating.
It actually ended up feeling a bit like a date night: cooking together, chatting, and knowing we’d have a meal at the end that we’d genuinely enjoy. In fact, we enjoyed that experience so much that we approached the second meal in exactly the same way - working as a team and taking our time with it.
However, for the final recipe (the fish goujon sandwiches) I decided to cook solo. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous, but the instructions were so clear that it never felt overwhelming.
That said, I should have checked the pantry list more carefully beforehand, as the recipe required an egg (resulting in a grumpy, last-minute dash to Tesco). Still, I finished the meal without any drama and felt genuinely proud of myself afterwards.

As for the food itself, every meal was seriously tasty and filling enough that we didn’t need dessert afterwards (although, obviously, we still had it). I also loved knowing exactly what was going into each dish, from the spices to the sauces, and having clear nutritional information laid out in front of me. I’ve kept all the recipe cards, and my boyfriend and I have already agreed we’ll dig them out again to remake our favourites.
My only real hesitation is whether I’d use the boxes consistently once the January reset energy wears off. I’m often out of the house on weeknights, and I’d hate for ingredients to go to waste - but with a bit of planning, and the option to skip weeks, it feels like a manageable concern rather than a dealbreaker.
I was happy with the delivery, however, looking at other reviews from shoppers on Trustpilot, there are a few things worth noting. With one person saying how they 'like the extra fee flexibility of picking an afternoon slot and the selection of meals', but their box was missing a few items.
They said: "We've had missing recipe cards and missing ingredients in several of our recent boxes." Another mentioned, while nothing was missing, the packaging of the box: "Things like salad leaves, fruit and veg should be packed last at the top of the box. Not underneath everything else, which sometimes has tins or heavier items in."
Final verdict
After a week of cooking with Green Chef, the biggest surprise wasn’t just how good the food tasted, but how much more confident I felt in the kitchen. What began as a slightly nerve-wracking experiment quickly became something I looked forward to, whether as a relaxed date night or cooking solo and actually enjoying the process.
Green Chef strikes a rare balance: meals that feel elevated and nourishing without being intimidating or time-consuming. Clear instructions, pre-portioned ingredients and thoughtful nutritional information remove much of the usual friction, and by the end of the week, I felt more capable and motivated than expected.
While it does require some forward planning, the option to skip or change boxes keeps it flexible rather than restrictive. Overall, Green Chef feels less like a rigid meal plan and more like a confidence-boosting step towards cooking at home, without sacrificing flavour, quality or convenience. For me, that’s a win. And one that might finally keep me off the takeaway app a little longer.
Alternative food subscription services
Besides Green Chef, there are plenty of other food subscriptions to consider. HelloFresh is a particularly popular option, with lots of weekly recipes, family-friendly menus and flexible plans.
Otherwise, Gousto offers the most choice on the market, with over 175 recipes to choose from every single week. Meals start at £3.20 per serving, and boxes contain pre-measured ingredients and step-by-step recipes.
And for those who don't want to make the meals themselves, Prep Kitchen removes the cooking part entirely. These chef-prepared, high-protein meals are ready in 3 minutes with less or zero prep.
