Apple crumble is a staple dessert for many during the winter months, and it can be prepared in a variety of different ways. Mary Berry’s crumble is a delicious winter warmer that uses two ingredients to provide a lovely crunchy topping.

The recipe notes said: “The apples and the nutty topping are cooked separately in Mary Berry’s apple crumble, producing exceptional crunch.” The crumble recipe has received a five-star rating on Good Food, proving it’s a popular dish amongst bakers. It serves six people and takes under one hour from start to finish.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5kg cooking apples
  • Half a lemon, juice only
  • 100g muscavado sugar

For the topping:

  • 50g plain flour
  • 50g porridge oats
  • 150g light muscavado sugar
  • 150g walnuts, roughly chopped
  • 50g sunflower seeds
  • 100g softened butter

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan before peeling and coring the apples, then cut them into thin slices.

Place in a small flameproof casserole dish with the lemon juice, sugar and six tablespoons of water.

Bring to a boil, then place in the oven and cook for about 20 minutes, or until the apple is tender but not mushy.

Put the dry topping ingredients in a mixing bowl and rub in the butter until it is evenly distributed and the mixture has formed small clumps. It’s the sunflower seeds and walnuts which help to create that lovely, crunchy texture.

Spread the mixture evenly over a baking tray and bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.

Stir to break up the crumble and sprinkle over the hot apple. Serve immediately with hot custard or double cream.
