A food critic who makes an "annual pilgrimage" to try the Wetherspoon Christmas menu was left surprised during his most recent visit. YouTuber Gary Eats admitted he was far from satisfied with the festive selection in both 2023 and 2024.

This led Gary to suggest that the Christmas menu "needed changing" before his trip to the King's Tun in Kingston. He notes the menu "hasn't changed much" since his appearance 12 months earlier. Nevertheless, he chose the sliced turkey breast and winter vegetables - observing it "doesn't actually say it's a Christmas dinner" - priced at £15.52 alongside a pint of Guinness. Gary additionally selected an 11in pizza topped with chicken, bacon, stuffing and brie.

"Would you go to Wetherspoon for a pizza," he questioned, whilst pointing out that numerous devotees of the chain insist the pizzas are "very, very good".

Following the arrival of his meal, Gary commended the stuffing along with the pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce and parsnips. Discussing the sauce, he remarked: "A very nice sweetness to the cranberry sauce, yeah, I like that, I do like the cranberry sauce."

Yet he believed his turkey was "thinly sliced" and the maris piper mashed potatoes were similarly "a little bit on the thin side" and "super, super mashed". One aspect Gary was especially delighted with was the temperature of his dish.

He commented: "Sometimes when you go into a Wetherspoon and the food comes out and it's not hot, this is absolutely perfect, well done to them."

Gary, however, questioned whether he could classify the meal as a traditional Christmas dinner. He noted: "It's lacking on roast potatoes, it's lacking in brussel sprouts but on the menu it doesn't say Christmas dinner."

He also mentioned that he had to take into account "the price element" when tasting the meal. He pointed out: "On the menu here, [A Guinness is] £4.63, in my local, it's £6, so you've got to bear that in mind. Will it fill you up? Undoubtedly. There's no shadow of a doubt that will fill you up."

However, the food critic was impressed by the festive pizza. He commented: "I actually think that's really tasty. The combination with the brie, the chicken, the stuffing, the bacon, I can tell you really goes together immensely well."

Gary once again lauded the value for money provided by the festive pizza, paying just £13.05 for an 11in pizza and an alcoholic beverage. His final dish was the giant profiterole, made with choux pastry, filled with vanilla cream and topped with chocolate sauce and a strawberry.

Upon trying the dessert, he exclaimed: "Oh that's good, I like that, I really like that. What it is, is naughty, a bit like myself. A little bit on the naughty side."

In total, Gary spent £32.62 on his Wetherspoon outing and concluded he's "not going to knock it". He observed: "When you take the price of a pint off, it's not expensive is it?".

The Wetherspoon Christmas menu is available every day except Christmas Day until 31 December.
