Lettuce can last 'months' in fridge if stored in 1 place — not the crisper drawer
Lettuce can be used in a number of dishes, but it can quickly spoil if not stored properly.

There’s nothing worse than reaching into your fridge for a bag of lettuce only to find it’s gone watery and slimy, especially if you only bought it a few days ago. Many of us are guilty of getting back from the supermarket and simply placing it in the crisper drawer without removing it from the plastic, but this can result in it spoiling much faster.
Plastic traps moisture and promotes bacterial growth, leading to food produce quickly going bad. While it might seem like a lot of effort to remove vegetables from their packaging, it’s worth it when it lasts much longer. But even if you grow your own lettuce, you might find that it quickly goes bad and knowing how to store it can make all the difference. One home expert has shared an easy way to keep lettuce in the fridge that will help it last for “months”.

Amiyrah Martin has earned over 100,000 followers on TikTok where she shares tips and tricks for frugal living, including how to keep food fresh for longer. In a recent video, she said: “If you’re not putting your lettuce in a glass jar, the bigger the better, and in your fridge, this is why it’s not lasting.”
While the creator recommends this for lettuce, including romaine and iceberg, she also said it will work for storing kale. But before placing it in a glass jar, you need to give it a proper clean and chop it up.
Many people don’t realise that lettuce has a protective skin, and keeping this on can also make it more susceptible to spoiling quickly. It also has a high water content, which is often why it goes slimy after a few days.
Instead, Amiyrah instructed viewers to get their hands on a salad spinner to properly wash and dry lettuce, and to make sure it’s “bone dry” before placing it in the glass by leaving it out on a cloth.

Once dry, you can go ahead and add it to a large glass jar with a lid and this method will work for both supermarket-bought or home-grown lettuce, as long as it’s properly dry.
Amiyrah said that she’s not exaggerating when she says that storing lettuce in here will help it last for months. You can also add a paper towel to the bottom of the jar to help absorb any moisture that might still be on the leaves.
But one viewer commented and recommended placing a paper towel across the top of the jar. They said: Put your paper towel across the top of the jar then put the top on it. Let it sit upside down for the first day, then you can remove the paper towel and it will take with it the excess water.”
