Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed more details about the new Tesla Model Y during the automaker’s latest quarterly earnings call.
During earnings call, which took place last night, CEO Musk confirmed the Model Y would no longer use an entirely new vehicle architecture – but instead, will borrow the platform built for the Model 3.
The decision not to build an entirely-new vehicle architecture should dramatically increase production efficiency.
This is a u-turn from the company's original plan, which wanted the Model Y to be “completely different” to anything Tesla has ever produced before.
“Upon the council of my executive team to reel me back from the cliffs of insanity, the Model Y will, in fact, be using substantial carry over from Model 3 in order to bring it to market faster,” Musk told investors during the Tesla earnings call.
"I have to thank my executive team for stopping me from being a fool. Model Y will have relatively low technical and production risk as a result."
Creating a new platform for a single car would be an incredibly costly measure.
Many manufacturers use the same platform to assemble multiple vehicles in order to simplify the process and keep costs down.

The Tesla Model Y will share a number of the same components with the Model 3, but will also borrow elements from the Model X.
Back in 2015, Musk replied to a tweet from a fan asking if the Model 3 would have the falcon-wing doors before immediately deleting it.
In the tweet it confirmed that either the Model 3 or Model Y will have falcon wing doors much like the Model X “@AwesometlOZ there will be a Model 3 and a Model Y. One of the two will.”
Before the Tesla boss could get rid of the tweet Tech Insider managed to captures a screenshot.

The Model Y isn't scheduled to start production until the end of 2019 or early 2020.
By the time the Model Y is introduced, autonomous driving could be much closer to a day-to-day reality.
This is likely to directly influence the way the Model Y is designed and how the driver will interact with the vehicle.
It has also not been confirmed what the Model Y will look like and whether it will be the SUV version to the Model 3, like the Model X is to the Model S, or whether out will sport a whole new design.
