Leading car mechanic Scotty Kilmer has stressed owners of second-hand petrol and diesel cars could fix major engine issues with a simple home tip “anybody” can take advantage of.

Motorists who notice a rattling sound from their engine may be suffering from a build-up of carbon which can be solved in less than 15 minutes.

The top mechanic said purchasing carbon cleaner from a local store and pouring it inside the engine will keep components in top condition.

Once the carbon is removed from a vehicle, parts will run a lot smoother and any noises are likely to disappear.

It means motorists could save a lot of money on hefty garage repair costs and avoid the hassle of driving it to a local mechanic.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty explained: “Now if your engine is making strange noises, sometimes you can fix it with a bottle.

“This 505 CRO is a carbon cleaner. It will clean carbon that is built up inside the engine

“And if carbon builds up inside the engine, the engine could get noisy as the oil doesn't flow right or the tensioner on the timing chain doesn't pop out fast enough so you hear a clatter on start-up.

“Now this bottle isn’t cheap, anybody can use it. You pour it in the engine, you rev the engine to about 2,000 RPM with a fan in front of the car so it doesn't overheat for about 15-20 minutes.

“Then when you change the oil all the carbon comes out with the oil. You put new oil and filter. I'm amazed at what this stuff can do.”

YouTube viewers quickly took to the comments section to praise Scotty for his advice.

@davekeller2798 said: “Most though don't have a problem if they are driven regularly.  Most carbon build up is found on cars that are driven slowly or short distances.”

@davecruzen9352 reacted: “Scotty...you are the encyclopedia of automobiles.”

@dogdooley4495 commented: “Change your oil every 5K and you'll never need it.”

Scotty’s recommended 505 CRO solution can be purchased online for around £50.

However, similar items that promise to clean an oil system can be purchased at UK stores for less than £10.

But, if parts are severely damaged motorists may still need to visit specialists and get replacement parts fitted.

According to ClickMechanic, The cost of an engine replacement “can vary significantly” depending on the location and model.

Fees can range from anywhere between £1,000 to £5,000 in a major blow to motorists on a tight budget.
