Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer has selected a "bulletproof" Japanese sports car as his number one second-hand used car on the market today.

Mike admitted his "top choice" for those on the lookout for a used classic car was the iconic Mazda MX-5.

The convertible has been dubbed a modern classic in recent years -despite its fairly affordable price tag.

The Wheeler Dealers host admits MX-5s can be picked up at car dealers for "only a few grand" and is one of the "most fun cars" motorists will ever get behind the wheel of.

He made the admission in a recent interview when asked to select his top choices for those on the lookout for models in 2024.

Mike told The Telegraph: "My top choice would be the best-engineered British sports car in the world; the Mazda MX-5 Mk3, from 2005 to 2015. I call it that because effectively it’s a reverse-engineered British sports car, isn’t it?

"The Japanese took the best the British had to offer in terms of MG and Healey back in the day, reverse-engineered it and made an amazing car with the MX-5.

"The Mk3 is one of the best fun cars you’ll ever drive. They’re fundamentally bulletproof and you can get one for only a few grand."

The 2.0 Mk3 was released in 2005 and was fitted with a 1,999cc engine producing 158bhp and 139 lb-ft of torque.

The model certainly packed a punch, reaching 0-62mph in just 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 132mph.

Models hit the market for £18,900 but can now be picked up online for a lot less.

AutoTrader has models available at around the £5,000 mark.

The MX-5 could also become a good investment with the Mk1 and Mk2 designs increasing in value.

The Mk1 edition has been a "mainstay" on Hagerty’s Price Guide for many years with the Mk2 singled out by specialists in 2022.

John Mayhead, editor of the UK Hagerty Price Guide said: "Price rises, as ever, caught our eye: until the end of 2021 values had been relatively flat, topping out at about £1500.

"Since then, we’ve seen a few sell for more than £3500 up to around the £5000 mark for a really good one. Like its older brother, it’s a surefire next-generation classic."
