Petrol and diesel owners desperate for more fuel-efficient vehicles have been recommended five models by a motoring expert.

Lucy Sherliker, Head of Customer at B-Corp accredited Zuto car finance has revealed the best vehicles for those desperate to cut down on their running costs.

Affordable vehicles from Toyota, Citroen, Peugeot and Fiat all make the list with drivers potentially able to make major savings.

It comes as the cost of fuel continues to be a problem for motorists with prices up by 10p per litre since the start of 2024.

Express.co.uk lists Lucy’s suggestions and why these vehicles could be ideal for those looking to slash prices.

The first on the list of Lucy’s recommendations is the Toyota Prius 1.8 VVT-I Active Auto hatchback.

Lucy said: “If you’re on the market for a more economical vehicle, as a classic option the Toyota Prius 1.8 VVT-I Active Auto has a very impressive 63 mpg for its range. This makes the Toyota Prius one of the most efficient cars on the market."

Alongside its cheap running costs, the Prius has previously been named UK’s most reliable car meaning drivers could keep maintenance charges low at the same time.

AutoTrader, the leading new and used car online marketplace, has models listed for just over £10,000.

The two-door C2 is one of the quicker cars on the list and may be ideal for those on a budget.

Motoring experts at Parkers have previously claimed C2 models can achieve up to 577 miles on a simple tank making it great for longer journeys.

Lucy added: “Another good choice is the Citroen C2 1.6 BlueHDi Feel 100hp which does 62 mpg.”

Peugeot’s plucky 108 is certainly great for motorists not wanting to visit the petrol pumps on a regular basis.

WhatCar? has previously claimed the car’s 1.0-litre engine can achieve a stunning 68.9 miles per gallon.

However, models fitted with stop/start technology can even reach up to 74.3mpg helping motorists eke out those extra drops.

Lucy stressed: “Other good options include the classic Peugeot 108, Citroen C1 and Fiat 500 thanks to their compact design.”

For something a bit different, look no further than the eye-catching Italian charm of the Fiat 500.

According to ChooseMyCar, the Fiat has established itself as a popular first car due to its affordable nature.

The model has also been praised for its “exceptional fuel economy” with models hitting an average of 60.1mpg.

Lucy added: “As a general rule of thumb, a MPG of 40-50 is considered good but the higher the number, the better. To calculate the MPG of your current car, set your trip counter to zero and start driving.

“Once you’ve completed the journey, divide the miles by the amount of fuel used and then times this result by 4.546 (the number of litres in a gallon).”
