Top Scotty Kilmer has warned motorists can avoid “thousands” in car repair bills by regularly checking a vital component found in every and vehicle.

Scotty stressed checking the health of a battery and replacing it when it gets low could prevent many other issues from arising.

Scotty highlighted that a low battery could well lead to “voltage surges” which could backfire.

Changing a battery is a mainly hassle-free and cost-effective repair compared to the extortionate fees of larger upgrades.

It means the simple check every once in a while could see road users pay just 10 percent of the price.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty said: “Today I'm going to tell you why it's a really bad idea to just leave your battery in your car until it finally dies and then replace it.

“Because modern cars are all run by computers, if your battery is getting really bad it might still start the car but it’s so low on electricity the alternator has to put out too much electricity. You can get voltage surges that ruin computer components.

"Now any mechanic or auto parts store can check your battery with one of these computers in about two minutes. My advice is if it says your battery is under 30 percent left, get another battery.

"A battery only costs 100 something bucks, but a computer can cost thousands. Even changing an alternator can cost 500 or 600 bucks.

“With a weak battery, the alternator has to work harder, it's going to wear out faster.

“So treat your car like a giant flashlight. If the battery is getting low, replace them.”

According to the leading car service and repair experts, BookMyGarage, new batteries should cost up to £100 in the UK.

However, final bills will vary depending on a range of factors such as the type of car and the length of time stated on the battery product.

Battery checks can be conducted with a simple diagnostic test which can cost as little as £30 at some providers.

Leading breakdown experts and car insurance specialists at the RAC are among the companies who can check easily for battery concerns.

Advanced technology can check whether the condition of a battery is deteriorating and if it needs to be replaced straight away.

Diagnostics checks can also determine if there’s a problem with a vehicle’s charging and starter system.
