Top 10 cheapest cars to cover named as drivers could save thousands
As motorists prepare for road tax and insurance to rise further, a motoring expert has claimed short-term cover could help drivers save significant money.
The temporary insurance company Cuvva has ranked the top ten cheapest cars to get short-term cover for, based on more than 600,000 policies.
As the cost-of-living crisis drives up the price of various factors involved in running a car, many motorists are paying over £1,000 per year to insure their vehicle.
However, Darryl Bowman from Cuvva suggested that borrowing a car that belongs to a friend or family could cut the cost of getting behind the wheel for some drivers.
He explained: "More and more drivers are choosing to borrow cars from friends and family to get around because it's affordable. The type of car you choose to drive can make a big difference to the price you pay for your insurance too.
"Many of the cheapest cars to insure are popular makes and models, like the Fiat 500, so drivers likely know someone with a car they can borrow for less than £13 an hour."
According to Cuvva, the cheapest car to temporarily insure is the Ford Ka, with the average motorist paying £12.05 per hour for cover.
Whilst the Ka has been out of production since 2021, it is still a popular choice for drivers looking for their first car due to its small and economical engine.
The similarly-sized Fiat 500 is another incredibly affordable choice for those looking to get temporary insurance, typically priced at £12.15 per hour.

Generally, small cars are the cheapest models to insure for short-term cover, with popular cars such as the Mini and the Citroen C1 being inexpensive to insure.
However, larger models can be surprisingly cheap. Cuvva found that the Citroen Berlingo, which is available as a van or an MPV, was the fourth cheapest car to cover, typically costing £12.30 per hour.
The Kia Sportage, one of the UK's best-selling cars of 2023, also featured on the list, making it a good choice for drivers looking to get behind the wheel of a practical family car.
