Rishi Sunak says TfL is 'hammering drivers at every opportunity' as thousands face fines
Speaking in the Commons, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called out Transport for London after thousands of drivers faced speeding fines over a fake sign.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has hit out at Transport for London (TfL) and the London Mayor Sadiq Khan for putting financial strains of drivers in the capital.
The comment comes following a fake speed limit sign that resulted in thousands of motorists facing fines.
Speaking in the Commons during Prime Minister's Questions, Rishi Sunak noted that he understands the setbacks many motorists across London and Wales are facing.
He said: "I do understand the concerns that local drivers have over this ongoing TfL issue. Whilst we're doing everything we can to back motorists across the country, it is disappointing that the Labour Mayor [of London] and indeed Labour-ran Wales are hammering drivers at every opportunity, whether that is temporary speed limits, blanket 20mph zones or the ULEZ expansion.
"I will make sure that my honourable friend has a meeting with the Minister to discuss his concerns."
In February 2024, around 600 motorists were fined for speeding when an incorrect speed limit sign appeared on a stretch of the A20 near Sidcup.
TfL reduced the speed limit on the major road to 40mph in October 2023 over concerns that it could become flooded. However, when a 50mph sign appeared, many drivers thought that the speed limit had been raised once again.
The Metropolitan Police has opened an investigation into how the sign ended up on the road, with TfL stating it was installed by an "unauthorised third party".

Announcing the Spring Budget, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt stated that many families are reliant on their car, having to spend more money to stay behind the wheel.
He added: "The Labour Mayor of London wants to punish motorists even more with his ULEZ plans, but lots of families and sole traders depend on their car."
Mr Hunt also highlighted that fuel duty will be frozen for another 12 months to avoid the cost of petrol and diesel from increasing further during the year.
