Carrying spare clothing item in car can help drivers stay safe and avoid £5,000 fine
With the UK set to face more cold temperatures, a motoring expert has warned that wearing certain items of footwear could see drivers fined up to £5,000.
The car leasing company Nationwide Vehicle Contracts has warned drivers to choose their shoes sensibly before getting behind the wheel this winter.
As the temperatures drop once again, some motorists may be tempted to wear some footwear that will keep them warm in their car.
However, Keith Hawes, Director of Nationwide Vehicle Contracts noted that, whilst driving in certain pairs of shoes is not illegal, it could put motorists and other road users at risk of accidents.
He explained: “While it is not illegal to drive shoeless or in improper footwear, drivers should hold off on wearing footwear that doesn’t allow them to operate their car properly.
“Anyone who is driving has the responsibility to operate their car and pedals correctly. So even with the cold weather, it may seem easy to wear warm, slip-on shoes, however this can have a large impact on your ability to drive safely.”

According to the Highway Code, no matter the weather, drivers must wear clothing and footwear that will not prevent them from being in control of the vehicle.
This rule does not exactly specify what kind of shoes can be worn when at the wheel of a vehicle, however anything with limited grip which could cause a driver’s feet to slip on the pedals or come loose is ill advised.
Drivers that do lose control of their vehicle due to bad footwear could be issued a fine of £100, however this could raise to £5,000 if the matter is taken to court.

Keith suggested that motorists who want to look smart and keep warm should have another pair of driving shoes inside their car to avoid running the risk of fines.
He advised: “Drivers should consider having an extra pair of shoes in their car, but they should make sure they are not too wide or too thick to avoid pressing two pedals at once.
“Ultimately, an extra pair of shoes will mean drivers can avoid fines and prioritise safety on the roads by ensuring they have the correct footwear for the vehicle.”
