Wet UK weather map sparks £25,000 handouts for households with farms
Households across the UK are being sent payments of up to £25,000 this summer
Households across the UK will be paid up to £25,000 each due to awful wet weather which has caused flooding.
Farmers or those with farm land are being told they will be handed a payment based on their farm’s size, with a minimum payment of £2,895 for eligible farmers, up to a maximum of £25,000, based on UK weather maps.
The payment applies to farmers whose land has been severely affected by flooding and wet weather who will need to do remedial work to make it farmable in future.
The government has confirmed that the payments will be made this summer but only to those identified as eligible by weather map data on rain and flooding.
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs said: “The Farming Recovery Fund originally opened in April, providing grants between £500 - £25,000 for farmers to return their land to the condition it was in before flooding due to Storm Henk. Following feedback from farmers, the scheme was updated to remove the 150 metre limit on land flooded by a river, thus including all flooded land near to an eligible river.
“Farmers whose land has been significantly damaged by water caused by flooding or exceptional rainfall this winter and spring will receive a payment to help cover the costs of bringing their land back into production. The Rural Payments Agency will identify farmers who are eligible for the payment and contact them with payments expected to be made to eligible farmers this summer.”
Defra will identify eligible farmers by using maps data to find land close to rivers which flooded, in the counties most affected by flooding, as well as rainfall data.
The government added that only farmers identified by this data will be eligible for the money with ‘no exceptions’.
