SPORTS Direct has promoted Matt Pearson to acting chief financial officer, 18 months after its last finance chief retired.

The sportswear retailer founded by billionaire Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has faced criticism from some shareholders over its slow response to replacing Bob Mellors, who retired in December 2013 on health grounds.

Pearson, who joined from accountancy firm EY in 2007, joins the board immediately.
Sports Direct chairman Keith Hellawell said: "Matt is leading our group finance team and is now perfectly placed to take on the additional responsibilities."
