Asda to pilot ‘click and collect’ scheme for Tube commuters
COMMUTERS who struggle on the Tube with their briefcase and bags of groceries are being offered respite under a pilot scheme being tested by supermarket Asda.
It has teamed up with Transport For London to launch a “click and collect” service at six London Underground station car parks.
Described as a “world first” it will allow customers to order food as well as some non-food and clothing items from their desk before noon and collect from delivery vans waiting at their home station after 4pm.
The first stations will be East Finchley, Harrow and Wealdstone, High Barnet, Highgate, Stanmore and Epping with more to follow if the scheme proves successful.
Asda said the scheme is part of a major push into London and the South-east, where it has traditionally had lower awareness and fewer stores than its competitors.
It hopes it will tempt commuters away from using rival convenience stores on their way home and increase the number of people in close proximity to an Asda from 53 per cent today to 70 per cent by 2018.
“South-east customers tell us they want the prices and quality provided by Asda value but they can’t access it easily,” said Asda retail director Mark Ibbotson.
