Shoppers await Christmas sales
STOREKEEPERS are in a “state of nervousness” as shoppers hold off Christmas purchases, warned the British Retail Consortium.
It reported sales up 0.4 per cent last month against weak figures a year ago.
In its monthly report it said Christmas shopping was starting later this year as consumers held out for bargains and retailers hoped for a last-minute rush.
Waitrose supermarkets said its seasonal sales were building up after a 7.8 per cent rise last week, including a 58 per cent rise in online sales.
