Olympic legacy all wrapped up
PART of the Olympic Stadium could be turned into exclusive souvenir handbags and sports bags as part of a campaign by the UK’s plastics industry to boost the Games’ legacy and encourage recycling.
A plastic “wrap” screen around the east London site was part of the plans to minimise crosswinds and project live coverage. It was scuppered by costs.
The Plastics 2020 Challenge, an industry-led campaign to encourage a reduction in packaging going to landfill, is pushing to save the screen and encourage the material to be reused for “green handbags”. The group signed an international declaration in Hawaii to prevent dumping plastic in the oceans.
Peter Davis, of the Plastics 2020 Challenge, said: “The plastic wrap could be turned into souvenir handbags and sports bags, carrying the Olympics logo and the signatures of famous athletes.”
Perhaps Olympics gold winner Sir Chris Hoy could lend his signature to the products. The Insider has heard he’s good at (re)cycling.
