Rio Tinto staff held in Shanghai
Four employees of mining giant Rio Tinto have been detained by Chinese authorities, the company said yesterday.
The reasons for their detention in Shanghai were unclear as no explanation had been given, it added. Three are believed to be Chinese citizens and one Australian.
The company said it had asked for an explanation and pledged to co-operate fully with any investigation. Rio last month scrapped a $19.5billion (£12billion) deal with Chinese state-owned metals group Chinalco, a move criticised by China’s official news agency.
