The House of Bernarda Alba review: Cervantes Theatre, until December 9
THERE is a chilling authenticity to this production of Federico García Lorca’s devastating play about an intractable widow who imprisons her five daughters at home to maintain their chastity and respectability.
A cast of English and Spanish‑speaking actresses perform in each language on alternate dates.
Director Jorge de Juan conducts like a maestro on a simple set and sound effects including tolling bells and bolted prison-like doors ramp up the atmosphere.
There is not a weak link in the cast.
Performances are terrific and I would happily return to see it in Spanish – and I don’t speak a word of it.
