'Avenue Q is a warm fuzzy hug' - reviews are in for puppet revival

JUMP TO...
Avenue Q, the puppet-fronted musical with songs about homosexuality, internet porn and more, first debuted in 2003, and quickly became a beloved tentpole in Broadway. 23 years later, it's back with refreshed content, revised characters, and a new home at London's Shaftesbury Theatre.
This week, reviews hit for the first shows, and they have been overwhelmingly positive. With dozens of five-star reviews and countless pull-quotes, the award-winning story and production have been praised for its prescient comments on OnlyFans, AI, and the state of the world.
London Theatre gave Avenue Q a glowing review, writing: "In a world full of doom and gloom, Avenue Q is a furry tonic shot. Yes, things are bad, it tells us. But all of it is only 'for now'. And, if a puppet telling you that doesn’t make you smile, who knows what will?"
The Londonist agreed: "Avenue Q is a warm, fuzzy hug. Even those rapscallion Bad Idea Bears get their happy ending — not, mind you, that they deserve it."
The Guardian went on to say: "Jeff Whitty’s award-winning book has been updated with jokey mentions of AI, OnlyFans and Spotify, while the song Mix Tape has a tongue-in-cheek reference to such an 'olden days' phenomenon."
However, not every review was completely positive.

The Independent noted that the show was not quite as poignant or pointed as its 2003 iteration.
"This slickness isn’t enough for Avenue Q to justify itself," the publication wrote: "Why is this show being revived today? I’m not sure there’s a good answer for this."
Thankfully, fans keen to find out where the new show stands can do so right now.
