The 1975 praised for donating THOUSANDS to LGBTQ+ Community Centre project
THE 1975 have been applauded for donating a hugely generous five-figure sum to an LGBTQ+ Community Centre in London.
The 1975 - Love Me
The band, fronted by Matty Healy, have amassed a loyal LGBTQ+ fanbase over the years, and gamely gave back via the new project’s crowdfunding efforts.
On the list of received donations is a generous £16,000 pledge in the group’s name.
They have not publicly commented on social media about their donation, but Healy retweeted a post from the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre’s account yesterday.
He also told The Observer: “You might wonder why it is needed, and even ask yourself what exactly is everyone still scared of, but sadly, I think stigma still exists even in London and we still have some way to go.”
Other celebrities to have helped the cause include Celebrity Big Brother winner and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Courtney Act.
The performer wrote: “I just made a donation to the new LGBTQ+ Community Center they’re building in my new home of London!
“If you have a few £ consider a donation to create a brilliant, needed queer space & resource where everyone will be welcome! 2 days till the fundraising ends @LdnLGBTQCentre.”
The Community Centre has so far raised £95,000 at time of writing, and has until tomorrow (June 13) to reach £100,000.
Last week it successfully hit its initial target of £50,000; before adding a Stretch Target to £75,000 and another to £100,000.

The Crowdfunding page for the venture reads: “The word ‘community’ is hard to define. For some, it’s a common geography, a shared history or passion that brings a group of people together. For LGBTQ+ folks, it’s who we are. For us, community, can be a lifeline.
“We’ve come a long way since homosexuality was partially decriminalised 50 years ago, but the fight for equality doesn’t stop there.
“Because of the tireless work of activists and campaigning groups over decades, we’re finally, boldly, out of the closet. But now, in 2018 and standing on the shoulders of giants, we want to come out of the shadows too.
“Our community, like every other, deserves a space that’s safe and secure to lay down roots.
“The Centre will be a completely accessible, multi-purpose space, run by and for LGBTQ+ people. It will be open from morning until night for use by individuals and campaigning groups.”
