Fields of Gold - a cover of a track by Sting - did not chart in this week’s official Top 100, revealed earlier today.
However at time of writing it is racing back towards the Top 10 on iTunes; at No14 at around 10pm, around the time Melua performed.
It is set to race higher as viewers rush to download it after having seen it performed live.
It’s been a few years now since the charity released an official single that went all the way to No1: in fact Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir was the last to achieve it, back in 2014.

The first Children In Need single was from Clannad in 1985, which peaked at No80.
As Melua performed tonight, one person tweeted: “So beautiful! Sir Terry would be so proud. Eva Cassidy too! I loved your version & am buying it pronto.”
