The 20-year-old departed the girlband last year in a blaze of controversy, with conflicting reports over when, why and how she opted out.
It came after the X Factor USA group's most successful year to date, after they scored huge hits with Work From Home and That's My Girl.
Now, speaking to Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show, Cabello has reflected on why she decided to exit.
Lowe asked her: “At what point do you realise the party’s over?”
“I think that happened to me as I was discovering my voice as an artist,” she replied.

Fifth Harmony will return later this week, it is rumoured
It was just time to sing my story and sing words that were coming from my heart
“Especially as a songwriter. I felt like I needed to express that.
“And it was just time to sing my story and sing words that were coming from my heart as opposed to words that people were writing for us.”
Lowe asked her if a key moment for her was witnessing Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction, to which she said: “I don’t think that influenced my decision, but I was definitely like, hey, you go Zayn!
“Pillowtalk was so good and I liked that it was so different to everything One Direction had done.”
Fifth Harmony, meanwhile, are poised to release their new single imminently - with Ultimate Music claiming a new song, Down, is due this Friday (June 2).
If true, it comes just two weeks after Cabello launched her solo career with Crying In The Club.
The song has thus far peaked at No48 in the UK.
