My Six Best Albums
TIM Vine, 45, is best known as a stand-up and for his role as Tim in the sitcom not Going Out, the new series of which starts next Friday at 9.30pm on BBC1. The DVD of season 5 and the boxed set of seasons 1-5 are out next month.
ELVIS PRESLEY: ELVIS PRESLEY
RCA Victor
It’s hard to pinpoint the Elvis magic but it’s evident on this album. Part of his appeal is that even he seemed surprised by his effect on people. This is Elvis in youthful abandonment in 1956 before the pressure and the drugs wiped him out. Listen to One Sided Love Affair and you can’t help smiling.
WILLIAM SHATNER: HAS BEEN
Epic Shatner’s style is often laughed at and he makes a very easy target if you want to be cynical. Over the top of great tunes he talks about episodes from his life and relationships. It’s moving and very clever. My favourite is That’s Me Trying where Shatner reveals the strained nature of his relationship with his daughter with heartbreaking honesty.
ELVIS COSTELLO: MY AIM IS TRUE
Tim Vine reveals his favourite albums
Commercial Marketing Another Elvis and another first album. Brilliant song writing and a very unfussy production which perfectly showcased the up-and-coming Costello. Alison was an instant classic and still sounds amazing. My brother got me into Costello in my teens so this takes me back to those days.
THE FALL: DRAGNET
Sanctuary
The Fall don’t sound like any other band and this is the album on which I most like them. The deliberately low-fi and frantic sound and Mark E Smith’s weirdness reminds me of teenage summers. I’m not sure how much of it is meant to be funny but there’s a lot that makes me chuckle.
KENNY EVERETT: THE WORLD'S WORST RECORD SHOW
Yuk Records
This is a compilation put together by the brilliant DJ. Far from being bad it is sensational. This Pullover by Jess Conrad is just one of the gems. As for the singer Nervous Norvus, I only had to hear Transfusion about blood donation for me to be an instant fan.
DEVO: OH NO IT'S DEVO
Virgin
I was a massive fan of Devo in the Eighties. A very odd but very exciting band that never had the hits the tunes deserved. This is a great album. I saw them in concert about four years ago when they were making a comeback. I wore a flower pot on my head which I had bought from their merchandise table for £18.
