Album review - Street Opera: Ashford & Simpson (Big Break)
One of the great songwriting teams of the 20th century, Nick Ashford and his wife Valerie Simpson, were behind bundles of top hit songs for Motown as well as the likes of I’m Every Woman for Chaka Khan.
As artists they were less successful, with their only real hit here being Solid. On this early Eighties concept album, available for the first time on CD, they are in great voice with the “opera” about a working man down on his luck. Timely and well worth a punt.
Verdict: 4/5
