Album review - Angelique Kidjo: Oyo
OYO is a real show of strength for New York-based Angélique Kidjo.
Grammy‑winning singer, Angélique Kidjo, revisits some favourite American soul tunes she grew up with in her native Benin and confidently arranges them with an eclectic slant that is typical of her career.
The linear groove of Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up is accentuated by Afro-beat percussion, the Yoruban makeover of Otis Redding’s I’ve Got Dreams To Remember is another highlight.
Her material is funky, laid-back and ranges from high-life to Beninese folk.
